Peanuts are usually harvested in a hard shell and this is often removed to reveal the tasty snack inside. However, even after this shell has been removed, there is usually a skin on the nutmeat which is sometimes removed. The process that helps in the removal of this outer skin is known as blanching and the result is blanched peanuts.

Nuts are blanched by putting peanuts in very hot water for a short while before rapidly cooling them in order to soften the skin. After this, the skin is rubbed off and it comes off leaving behind the white nutmeat.

Both blanched peanuts and unblanched peanuts are very good and the customer’s preference is determined by what they intend to do with the nuts. If you wish to cook or bake, blanched peanuts are much better because heat often softens the skin of the nuts and if you cook with unblanched peanuts, the food will look messy as the skin will be scattered everywhere. However, if you intend to have the peanuts as a snack, there is nothing better than using unblanched peanuts. This is because the skin has its own unique taste and it adds some flavour to the legumes. Furthermore, the skin also has nutrients which are necessary for a healthy and balanced diet. Both types of nuts are however tasty and they should be part of any healthy diet.
